Introduction to Avennia Winemaker Blog

I would also like to welcome you to our new website. With this blog, I will be keeping you up to date on the various machinations of a working winery. There is a beautiful rhythm to the year here, and I hope to share with you on this page. From the sublime (the changing flavor of a ripening sauvignon blanc grape) to the banal, yet no less important (bottling) the work changes with the seasons. Now, as spring approaches, the 2011 vintage red wines are all blended and awaiting bottling—which will start next month—and we are just getting our first glimpses of the 2012 wines. This looks like a classic, ripe vintage for Washington. The wines are large scaled and plush, but with a definite structure to them that is nearly hidden by the fruit. These will be exciting wines to follow, and we look forward to the blending trials in a few months, and seeing how they might all fit together.

And as the vintage winds down in the cellar, exciting things are happening out and about too, starting with our first appearance at Taste WA. Please stop by and say hello at our table if you are attending. I am also very pleased to be sitting on the panel for a key seminar on Saturday morning, “Washington vs The World.” There our 2010 Arnaut Syrah will be going up against some very heavy hitters from France and Australia.

Thank you for stopping by, hope you will come back and visit us.
